Caring for your lawn involves many different steps and treatments. Without fertilization, the grass will be weakened. Without weed control, you will have an issue with problem weeds growing in your yard—and the list goes on.

At Turf Tech Fertilization, our lawn experts have devised a treatment schedule that can be administered throughout the year to keep your grass in tip-top condition. If you are in Lowell, Ada, Cascade, and the nearby areas of Michigan, learn about the ideal lawn treatment schedule for your yard.

When should lawn treatments be applied?

It is best to apply lawn treatments periodically throughout the year. Each treatment builds on the previous one to establish a strong, healthy, and verdant lawn.

Early Spring

In early spring, we start your grass off on the right foot by applying a pre-emergent weed control treatment for crabgrass. Crabgrass and other broadleaf weeds can be difficult to get rid of once they have grown in your lawn, so this pre-emergent treatment helps to kill them off before they start growing. You may also consider an aeration treatment at this time, as it can help alleviate soil compaction after being stuck under layers of snow and ice all winter long.

Late Spring

Around late April to mid-May, we'll start applying slow-release fertilizer treatments to the grass. We use nitrogen-heavy fertilizer because the element of nitrogen contributes to maximum chlorophyll production. Slow-release fertilizers provide a more steady flow of nutrients to your lawn than quick-release does. We'll also perform another treatment of weed control, spot-checking for any growth of common weeds like clover, thistle, and speedwell.

Early Summer

Along with another application of slow-release fertilizer and weed control, early summer is when it is recommended to apply preventative grub control treatment. Grubs will rapidly and quickly destroy your lawn without this treatment. They are voracious eaters and target the roots of the grass, removing the ability to absorb nutrients from the soil.

Late Summer

Once late summer begins, generally, around late August, we again apply more fertilization and weed control to continue keeping your lawn as healthy as possible. We can also check for any grubs that may have hatched and do a post-emergent or curative treatment for them at this time. Hopefully, the preventative treatment took care of any grubs in the lawn, though.

Early Fall

Around September or October, we usually aerate your lawn. It's recommended to aerate once a year, so if you did not have aeration done in the spring, it should be done at this time. Along with aeration, it is typically best to overseed so that the seeds can sink into the tiny holes made by the aerator and establish deeper roots. We also administer another round of fertilization and weed control at this time.

Late Fall

In late fall, it is time for the last lawn treatment of the year. A final fertilization treatment before winter helps to strengthen the grass so that it can handle the winter dormancy period and then come out of it strong and ready to handle the next growing season.
